Capsules
The building blocks of your knowledge, individual pieces of saved context.
A capsule is a single piece of saved context. It can be a solution, a decision, a code snippet, a prompt template, or anything else worth reusing.
Reference IDs
Every capsule gets a human-friendly reference ID scoped to your account and its Type, like @docker/3 or @decisions/12. These IDs are unique within your account for a given Type, so your @docker/3 is independent of another user's. You can use references to link capsules together, building a connected knowledge base without copy-pasting.
Structure
Each capsule contains:
- Title: a short, descriptive name
- Content: markdown-formatted body with the actual knowledge
- Type: the category it belongs to (e.g., Solutions, Decisions)
- Summary: an optional short description for search results
- Attachments: files, screenshots, or logs (optional)
Images in a body
A capsule body shows an attached image or file through its durable link: the path /api/preview/attachments/image/<key> for an image, or /api/preview/attachments/file/<key> for any other file. That form keeps working for every reader: the capsule page, share links and published pages each turn it into a link that reader can open. When an assistant uploads a file, the reply includes this form as embed_markdown, and a body that names the file, like , is rewritten to it. That rewrite is a change to the capsule, so the upload reply's capsule_updated_at carries the capsule's new updated_at; an edit that checks the capsule's version must send that value, or it is refused as out of date. Links that carry an access token, such as an attachment's image_url, expire within an hour, so a save rewrites one that points at the capsule's own file and refuses one that points at another capsule's. Encrypted bodies are stored exactly as sent.
Creating Capsules
You can create capsules in two ways:
- Via MCP: ask your AI assistant to save context directly: "Save this as a Solution"
- Via Web UI: use the Symbol dashboard to create and edit capsules manually
See Create Your First Capsule for a step-by-step walkthrough.
Encryption
Capsules can be end-to-end encrypted at creation time. Two important constraints apply:
- Encryption is permanent. Once a capsule is created as encrypted, it cannot be changed to unencrypted (or vice versa).
- Encrypted capsules cannot be shared. Their visibility is locked to Self and share links cannot be created for them.
