API access is free during preview.
Symbol's HTTP API is currently served under /api/preview/*. There is no separate API tier or per-request charge today — your plan's per-user request budget is the only ceiling that applies. When the API is promoted to v1, Symbol will publish the v1 pricing structure on the API changelog before it takes effect, and existing preview integrations get a deprecation window per the stability policy.
Each API key has a per-key request sub-ceiling on top of your per-user budget so a single integration can't starve your other integrations. The default scales with your plan (400/hr on Free, 800/hr on Pro — 80% of your per-user cap; Teams matches Pro today), so a Pro upgrade lifts your per-key headroom automatically. You can override it per key at Settings → API Keys up to your full plan budget.
Frequently asked.
- Yes. Pro has no count cap on capsules — growth is bounded by two objective resources instead. (1) Your 1 GB storage quota, which counts both attachment files and the byte length of every capsule's text body, so it's a real ceiling not a token one. (2) A per-user creation rate of 100 capsules per hour — far above any normal human or AI-assistant workflow, but low enough to catch automated dumping. Full policy lives at /terms#fair-use.
- Yes — every Symbol account, including Free, can call
/api/preview/*with no extra charge during the preview period. The plan you're on (Free, Pro, Teams) determines your per-hour request budget, but nobody pays extra for API access today. Pricing for/api/v1/*is to be determined and will be announced on the API changelog before it takes effect. - Each API key has a sub-ceiling on top of your per-user budget so a single integration can't accidentally consume your entire account budget and starve your other integrations. The default scales with your plan and is set to 80% of your per-user cap: 400/hr on Free and 800/hr on Pro (Teams accounts use the same per-key default as Pro today). That leaves 20% of your budget free for additional keys while still letting a single key reach most of your plan's budget. You can raise or lower it per key at Settings → API Keys if you want to dial it in.
- Every authenticated request to
/api/preview/*counts against your per-user budget for the current hour. Recovery and observability paths (billing, GDPR export, the rate-limit status endpoint itself) have separate, narrow budgets so they stay usable when you've exhausted your main one. Public, unauthenticated routes are IP-rate-limited rather than counted against a user budget. - Rate limits are not part of the breaking-change contract — we may tune them up or down as we see how preview is used. Any change is recorded as cosmetic on the API changelog. Limits will only ever go up at promotion to
v1, never down without explicit notice. - Yes. Pro and Teams subscriptions cancel at the end of the current billing period; you keep access until then. Cancelling Pro reverts your account to Free — your existing capsules stay, but new ones are blocked once you exceed the 50-capsule Free limit.
- Not yet. Pricing is intentionally kept simple at this stage; we'll revisit when the surface stabilises out of preview.
- The listed $5/seat price holds at any size, but get in touch via support if you have specific compliance, SSO, or onboarding needs and we'll talk through what fits.
