Revisions
How Symbol saves revisions of your capsules, and how collaborator edits are tracked.
Every capsule keeps a history of revisions so you can see how it changed over time and restore an earlier version if you need to.
When a revision is saved
Every time you save a change to a capsule, Symbol records a new revision. There's no waiting period and no coalescing. Rapid, back-to-back saves each become their own entry, so nothing you deliberately save is discarded.
Only content is tracked. Saving without changing the content (or changing only metadata, such as the capsule's project) doesn't add a revision, so your history stays free of duplicates.
Collaborator edits
Every collaborator's save is recorded the same way. When a different collaborator edits the capsule, their change is saved as its own revision.
This keeps the history clear about who changed what: every handoff between collaborators is a distinct entry in the revision list, so you can always trace an edit back to the person who made it.
How long revisions are kept
Every edit can be undone for at least 30 days, and the current version of a capsule is kept for as long as the capsule exists.
- A revision is removed 30 days after a newer one replaced it, not 30 days after it was written. However long a capsule sits untouched, its next edit still keeps the text it replaced, so you can restore it. If you delete a revision yourself, the one before it is kept until 30 days after the next remaining revision, so the edit that revision made can still be undone.
- The current revision can't be deleted, because it is what the next edit is undone against.
- End-to-end encrypted capsules keep no revisions.
As the owner you can always restore what an edit replaced. A teammate sees revisions from the time the capsule was shared with them, so when a teammate makes the first edit to a capsule you last changed before sharing it, you restore the earlier text.
